Dina’s Docket: Weekly Trump Recap (4/12/24)

Another week, another round of updates in the many ongoing Trump trials. (The nonpartisan nonprofit JUST SECURITY has a fabulous master calendar of key dates in Trump’s trials.)

This week was all about Trump’s attempts to delay his New York hush money criminal trial.

Trump lost three attempts to delay that trial, which means it is set to start on Monday, April 15, with jury selection. He also said this week that he would be honored to go to jail if he violated the gag order in that case. The judge had said that if he does violate the gag order, he is going to be very serious about it with potentially high fines or even possibly jail.

Personally, I think that Trump should be treated as any other criminal defendant if he does violate the gag order. He should have these fines or go to jail; if you're unwilling to do it to Trump, then you really shouldn't do it to the next criminal defendant does it, because then that's just not fair. It's not a matter of ‘silencing him’ as he says — it's a matter of keeping our justice system safe and secure for everybody.

As for jury selection coming up on Monday, it's actually one of the most important parts of a trial because who your jurors are will make a big difference. Not only that, it will give a chance for both the prosecution and the defense lawyers to introduce themselves to the jurors. This will be the most informal way that they will be talking throughout the whole trial, and they’ll be speaking directly to each of the jurors — so it’s a chance to connect with them…if they're good at their jobs.
