Dina’s Docket: Weekly Trump Recap (2/23/24)

Friday, February 23, 2024

Another week, another round of updates in the many ongoing Trump trials. (The nonpartisan nonprofit JUST SECURITY has a fabulous master calendar of key dates in Trump’s trials.)

GEORGIA

We’ve got breaking news out of Georgia this week in the ongoing ethics investigation into District Attorney Fani Wilis. Newly disclosed cell phone data records, according to the defense, puts Nathan Wade at the condo of Fani Willis in 2021 – evidently during the nighttime hours, despite testimony on the stand that he never spent the night there.

This is a developing story. In a likely opposition motion, we might see that Wade’s analysis was just wrong, or hear comments about how cell phone data only specifies a general area rather than precise location. However, if they can’t move past this, the trial may devolve into questions about what the definition of “night” was on the witness stand.

If it’s ultimately revealed that their testimonies had inaccuracies, it could be a devastating blow for Fani Willis – not only in this specific Trump case, but potentially more broadly in her position as District Attorney in general.

NEW YORK

In New York, Donald Trump lost a motion asking the judge to delay enforcement of his $464 million judgment. If you’re keeping score, that fine is accruing an astonishing $87,000 in interest per day. Attorney General Letitia James says that if Trump doesn't pay up, she will seize his properties in New York. Don’t worry: that is not unusual. If you don't pay up, somebody can put liens on your property. Most likely, though, he will put up money in a bond in order to appeal his case.

FLORIDA

In Trump’s classified documents case in Florida, home of Mar-a-Lago, Judge Cannon has been making some questionable rulings. These rulings are so questionable, in fact, that they may give ammunition to Jack Smith to remove her from the case altogether. Right now, that trial is set for May 20th, which will most likely be pushed back.

SUPREME COURT

We're still waiting to hear from the Supreme Court whether they’ll decide to stay or take the case in terms of Trump’s immunity claims. Hopefully we’ll know soon, since the presidential election season is now fully underway.
